Ray King

Advisory Committee

Ray joined Barwon’s Investment Advisory Committee in August 2015. Ray is currently Managing Director of Sovereign Investment Research, a firm he founded in 2000. His role includes providing specialist investment advice and consulting to institutional investors and investment managers.

Ray has worked this industry for more than 25 years commencing with Towers Perrin in 1990 where he was Manager, Asset Consulting. In 1994 he joined Industry Fund Services (IFS). Ray was responsible for the development of its asset consulting (now Frontier Advisers) and funds management (Industry Funds Management) businesses. He was also a Partner of Mercer heading their Global Alternatives Boutique in APAC from 2012 to 2015.

Ray is today recognised as a leading adviser on alternative assets in Australia, having worked with a vast number of superannuation funds since 1990 to establish some of the largest investment programs in Australia.

He began his career at BHP in 1974 and previous work experience included being Chief Economist for a major public authority. Ray is a director of VFMC. He was made a Life Member of the Australian Chapter of IMCA in 2012,which he founded in 2000.

Rick Harper

Advisory Committee

Rick joined Barwon’s Investment Advisory Committee in October 2011. Rick is Executive Chairman of wealth manager, Verity Private Asset Management and Managing Director of Verity Capital Management Limited,an investment advisory firm he founded in 2000. He is a member of the advisory board of Zurich-based alternatives specialist, LGT Capital Partners.

Rick founded Verity Capital in 2005. Rick was CEO of Superannuation Funds Management Corporation of South Australia (Funds SA) from 2000-2005 and CEO of the South Australian Government Financing Authority from 1994-2000.

In recent years, Rick has also been a director of ASX-listed diversified financial services company, IOOF Holdings Limited, and Chairman of Barclays Global Investors’ Australian compliance committee.

Tim Oldham

Independent Member of Risk & Compliance Committee and Property Valuation Committee

Tim joined Barwon’s Risk & Compliance Committee and Property Valuation Committee in March 2020. Tim has had a focus for the last 25 years on risk management in financial services, both as a practitioner and as a consultant. Most recently Tim was Chief Risk Officer for CBA’s International Financial Services division, based in Hong Kong with oversight of banking and insurance businesses in China, Vietnam, South Arica and Indonesia.

He was lead partner for Deloitte Australia’s financial services risk advisory practice for 4 years and was Head of Business Risk and Credit Strategy for Westpac’s Institutional Bank for 3 years. Earlier he was with Macquarie Group for 16 years acting as an advisor on risk to Macquarie’s corporate and government clients and as a Division Director in Macquarie’s Risk Management Group.

Sally Preston

Registry Manager

Sally is our Registry Manager responsible for the registry administration of the Barwon funds. Prior to joining Barwon in 2020, Sally spent 12 years at UBS Investment Bank. As Transition Manager she was responsible for onboarding new funds and co-ordinating connectivity between UBS trading systems, client and third party platforms. She has also held various administration roles across investment banking and property sectors in Sydney and London.

Kym Weidner

Fund Operations Manager

Kym joined Barwon in February 2008 as Investment Administration Manager. She has had a career in fund administration and operations and has been a member of Barwon’s compliance committee since she joined in 2008. In May 2019 she was appointed Head of Compliance and Fund Operations. Kym is responsible for Barwon’s corporate compliance and the day to day compliance of the Barwon investment funds as well as overseeing Barwon’s fund administration and investor servicing. Prior to joining Barwon Kym worked at QED Capital, Jenkins Investment Management and AMP.

Cynthia Makokha

Assistant Accountant

Cynthia Makokha is an Assistant Accountant responsible for providing both corporate and property fund accounting services to Barwon’s management team. Prior to joining Barwon, Cynthia worked at RateSetter Australia, responsible for the day to day operations of the finance department as well as the lending platforms.

Cynthia holds a Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor in Business from the University of Newcastle (Australia), and is currently undertaking the CA program.

Evan Wardrope

Evan is Head of Finance at Barwon and is focused on managing all aspects of property fund and corporate accounting at Barwon. Prior to joining Barwon Evan was a Finance Manager at Charter Hall, responsible for financial, tax and management reporting for an unlisted commercial office fund.

Evan has over ten years accounting experience in both listed and unlisted property funds.

Andrew previously worked within a multi-family private investment house specialising in property development finance where he also assumed an analyst role. Prior to this, Andrew worked at Macquarie Bank as a SMA trader.

Peter Conners

Co-Head of Property, Partner

Peter is a Partner of Barwon, with responsibility for Barwon’s specialist transactions. Peter works closely with the property team in overseeing the execution of Barwon’s property transactions and fund structuring. Peter’s work for Barwon has included managing complex transactions such as the “public to private” transactions of Colonial First States ASX listed CFI portfolio ($120m) and Macquarie Banks’s ASX listed MPG private equity portfolio ($110m).

Peter has a wide range of investment experience, working predominantly with emerging companies in both the private and public markets. Prior to joining Barwon, he worked in corporate advisory at Patersons Securities. Prior to Patersons Securities, Peter was an Investment Manager at Macquarie Bank in their technology venture capital fund, which made seed investments in companies such as Seek and LookSmart. Peter commenced his career as a barrister and solicitor in commercial litigation.

Jonathon Pullin

Head of Property Finance, Partner

Jonathon is the Head of Property Finance at Barwon. Jonathon works in partnership with developers and banks to provide dynamic and tailored capital solutions suited to the project. Jonathon is also responsible for the strategic direction and management of the property finance team.

Jonathon has been actively involved in property development finance since 2012. In that time, Jonathon has worked with a variety of developers, advisors and capital arrangers. In 2015, as the head of east coast operations for a multi-family investment house, Jonathon successfully led the company’s expansion into the New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland markets. Jonathon began his career in Perth working in funds management and corporate advisory for listed and private mining and resources companies.

Jonathon is an active and committed advocate of the property finance sector and has held committee positions with both the Property Council of Australia and the Urban Development Institute of Australia.

Shirley Song

Investment Analyst

Shirley is an Investment Analyst supporting Barwon’s property team with a focus on investment analysis, due diligence and valuations. Prior to joining Barwon, Shirley has worked across asset management, investment management and corporate finance, advising clients and being directly involved in a number of mid-market transactions.

Shirley’s property experience includes roles held at Morgan Stanley, KPMG and a boutique property developer and asset manager. Shirley holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Sydney. Shirley is admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

Stephen is an Assistant Asset Manager supporting Barwon’s strategic Asset Management team. Sarah Flook

Asset Manager

Sarah is an asset manager at Barwon, principally focused on strategic asset management of a portfolio of healthcare assets.

Sarah has over 6 years’ experience in real estate and funds management sectors, including investor relations, asset management and corporate recovery. Prior to joining Barwon, Sarah worked for AXA Investment Managers and also previously worked in London, for a real estate firm. Sarah successfully passed the RICS accreditation in 2015.

Brendan See

Investment Manager

Brendan is an asset manager at Barwon, principally responsible for managing a portfolio of healthcare properties from a strategic standpoint.

Brendan has over ten and a half years’ of experience in finance spanning funds management, corporate finance and restructuring. During his career in funds management Brendan’s primary focus has been healthcare real estate, including commercial and financial management, modelling and treasury and financing functions. Prior to working in funds management Brendan worked in chartered accounting firms where his focus was transactions and distressed situations.

Brendan has a bachelor of business from Queensland University of Technology, is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Zac Paulic is a Property Asset Manager at Barwon. He is actively focussed on leading the strategic asset management of the Barwon Healthcare Property Fund.

Prior to joining Barwon, Zac worked as an Asset Manager for Rockworth Australia, from 2015 to 2017, and founded a real estate business immediately following his graduation from university.

Josh is an Investment Analyst supporting Barwon’s property team with a focus on investment analysis, due diligence and valuations. Prior to joining Barwon, Josh worked for Colliers International as a commercial property valuer specialising in the healthcare and retirement living property sectors.

Josh has further experience in the wider property industry, having worked as a Quantity Surveyor for New Zealand’s largest construction company. Josh holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) from the University of Otago (New Zealand), Bachelor of Construction (Construction Economics), from the Unitec Institute of Technology (New Zealand) and a Graduate Diploma in Property Valuation from the University of Melbourne. Mitch Stone

Investment Analyst

Prior to joining Barwon in 2017, Mitch worked as a Manager with Pepper Property Advisory from 2015 to 2017 where his role involved the provision of strategic advice in relation to real estate capital, acquisitions, divestments and occupier advisory.

Mitch’s previous experience has seen him gain exposure within the legal profession, in addition to funds management and real estate development, financing and construction.

Srimathi is a property analyst focused on investment analysis, strategic asset management, due diligence and reporting. Srimathi has over 7 years of real estate investment analysis experience.

Prior to joining Barwon in 2016, Srimathi worked as an Associate with CBRE Global Investment Partners, Singapore from 2013 to 2015 where her role included due diligence on investment opportunities, regular re-forecasting of these investments and managing and monitoring the performance of clients’ investment portfolios across the Asia Pacific Region.

Tom Patrick

Head of Healthcare Property, Partner

Tom is a Partner of Barwon and a portfolio manager focused on the Barwon Healthcare Property Fund. Tom’s responsibilities include property acquisitions, asset management and fund raising. Tom has over 10 years experience in property funds management, advisory and banking in both the healthcare and direct property spaces. Prior to joining Barwon in 2014, Tom was the Senior Manager in the Portfolio team at Stockland.

Tom completed a Master’s thesis in Australian healthcare real estate.

Rob Morrison

Co-Head of Property, Partner

Rob is a founding Partner of Barwon with responsibility for Barwon’s property investment business. Rob oversees the teams responsible for the day-to-day management of the Barwon Healthcare Property Fund, the Childcare Property Fund and institutional property mandates. Rob Morrison worked at AMP for a total of 21 years, including 16 years of investment management, specialising in property investment management.

Rob was the Director of Property for AMP Capital and Henderson Global Investors, with responsibility for $11 billion of property portfolios, covering investing in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Rob also worked as a portfolio manager for property securities in AMP’s Equities Division. Rob is currently a Non-Executive Director of Ingenia Communities Group (ASX: INA).

Lisa Swanton

Investment Manager

Lisa is an Investment Manager within the Private Equity team, where she focuses on listed private debt funds. Lisa’s responsibilities include investment analysis, market research and stock selection in the listed private equity and listed private debt strategies. She is also responsible for portfolio construction of the Barwon Global High Income Fund. Prior to joining Barwon in 2013, Lisa was a Senior Investment Analyst at a funds management firm in London focussed on student accommodation and residential real estate.

Lisa holds a Bachelor of Science (Economics and Finance) from University College Dublin and a Master of Science (Risk Management and Financial Engineering) from Imperial College Business School, London.

Kate Hayward

Partner

Kate is a Partner of Barwon and an investment manager within the Private Equity team. Her responsibilities include listed private equity research, business development and client relations.

Prior to joining Barwon in 2009, Kate was the co-founder of a US online accommodation booking start-up and in 1995 established a New York based marketing/communications company whose clients included a number of Australian companies with US operations.

Prior to her work in the USA, Kate had seven years of experience as an equities analyst for Prudential Bache Securities (Melbourne and New York) and ANZ Investment Bank (Melbourne).

Prior to joining Barwon in 2018, James was a portfolio manager at Walsh & Co Asset Management where he managed an ASX listed Asian equities multi-manager fund and an ASX listed global emerging markets equities multi-manager fund. Prior to joining Walsh & Co, James was a sell-side research analyst at Winterflood Securities, covering the listed investment companies sector in London.

James covered investment companies across a wide variety of asset classes, with a particular focus on property, infrastructure and listed private equity.

Sam is a founding Partner of Barwon with responsibility for leading Barwon’s private equity investment business. Sam oversees the team responsible for day-to-day management of the Global Listed Private Equity Fund, the Pareturn Barwon Listed Private Equity Fund and institutional private equity mandates.

Sam Armstrong has been involved in alternative investments since 1990. Prior to Barwon, Sam was the Joint Managing Partner of Quay Partners, a specialist private equity fund-of-funds business founded in 2000. Quay Partners was the first independent private equity fund of funds and secondaries specialist in Australia. Before forming Quay Partners, Sam was Head of Alternatives at Macquarie where he worked for over 10 years. Sam developed an alternatives investment strategy at Macquarie that included investments across a wide range of asset classes including Australian private equity, international private equity, infrastructure and opportunistic property.
